I have a client that has a laptop and it can connect via wifi to the internet but when connected directly to a cable modem via hardlain through the eithernet port it does not connect to the net. The cable modem will work on the desktop fine so it's not a cable or a modem problem. What would prevent a machine from cnnecting to the internet? I checked the setting in the tcpip and all is set for automatic and obtaining ips and dns's automaticly.
ok if you've checked the ip and dns are sent to automatic, the ethernet port is obviously installed properly. you may want to try going to start, run and typing cmd. when you are in the command prompt try typing ipconfig /renew then press enter. this will renew your ip and dns setting s on your network ports. also make sure in network connections that the ethernet port is enabled.
hope this helps, if not let me know.

Woof, what kind of ip address does your client get when connecting directly via ethernet to the net? is it the one that the isp has assigned? or is it a 192.168.xxx, or 169.254.xxx address?
What you could also try doing is not only making sure that you've got the drivers, but making sure that there're no conflicts in the device manager for your network card.
What OS is the person running, and what kind of ethernet card is it?
Have you tried disabling the wireless card, restarting the machine and seeing if only with the ethernet card enabled, they're able to get an ip address?
Hope this helps.
There is one thing you also need to check. If you plug directly into the modem it might not work but if there is a router in between then it should work. I have a dsl modem/router but I have bridged it so that it is only now a modem and if I plug directly into it I get nothing. It will only work if I connect to the router that is in turn connected to the modem. Also I would check a different ethernet cable if you haven't already. Also I suggest reinstalling the network adapter. Also check services.msc to make sure that the dhcp and dns services are running. Dns is not actually neccessary but make sure it is at least set to manual. Although dhcp client has to be running otherwise you wouldn't get an address from your wireless adapter. hmmmmmm is puzzled. Also check device manager to see if ther is any hardware issues just to be sure.
with drupy tail and an embarised look woof asks: where do I go to find the ip address of the card? CAn I do that through ipconfig? Yea, I should know this. Thanks all for some excellent suggestions. The cable that I am connecting with is a good cable because it does work on the desktop computer. Someone also suggested to me to log in to the cable modem and reset to default settings. any thoughts there? This is a comcast modem and aparently it has a battery backup in side because unplugging it still shows lights and it still functions. Again thanks for giving me some things to look at.
To get the ip address of the card, go to start, settings, then network connections in xp.
go to the properties of your local area connection.
Go to the support tab, your connection info should be there.
The ipconfig command to display all info is, start, run, cmd, then typing ipconfig /all in the command prompt, hth.
